Metro Manila is one of the most densely populated
Metropolitan Cities in the world.
As to date, it is home to almost thirteen million people which make it the third most populous
urban area in the world. As for open spaces, only 0.2% of Metro Manila’s land mass is green and open if the La Mesa dam watershed is factored-out.
For context again, the United Nations recommends that there should be nine square meters of open space for every resident of a city. Metro Manila fails miserably in this respect.
In 2023, The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) led the ground breaking for the construction of a public park here in Pasay City. This long strecth of empty space along Roxas Boulevard will be turned into a green park.
Dubbed as the Roxas Boulevard Promenade, the linear park will occupy 1.6 hectares and will have a budget of P70 million. It will have amenities such as a wellness plaza, jogging and bike lanes, a multi-purpose court including a football pitch, a pet
park, a police outpost, and an MMDA extension office.
The pet-friendly park will feature a futsal area with mini-futsal field, artificial turf, benches, bleachers and fences. It also has a jogging path and bike lane, seating area and solar lamp posts.
The park is part of Pasay City’s Adopt-a-Park Project and the funding for its construction will be sourced from the agency’s savings. In 2022, the MMDA started planning the construction of the green space after the Philippine Reclamation Authority donated the vacant land.
The Roxas Boulevard Promenade may be extended to up to five hectares should the planned extension to the portion of Mia Road in Parañaque continue. Under the MOA, PRA as the owner of the site, has agreed with MMDA to utilize the area to help in promoting urban greening and park/green open spaces development in Metro Manila.
Located at the Libertad Pumping Station to EDSA cor. Roxas Boulevard, the Roxas Boulevard Promenade has a length of 800 linear meters and a width of 22 meters with an approximate development area of 17,495 square meters.
The Roxas Boulevard Promenade is one of the more than 30 parks being developed as part of the urban renewal project of the agency. The project aims to partner with Metro Manila local government
units, concerned regional line agencies, private sector, and other stakeholders in the development and rehabilitation of parks and open spaces in the metropolis as well as to create public open spaces that encourage an active lifestyle and generally contribute to the overall wellness of the inhabitant of Metro Manila.
Current Progress
The Roxas Boulevard Promenade is underway and construction is now in full blast. The park now have park benches, bollard lights, lamp posts and several art installations scattered throughout the area.
