Thousands of illegal structures along the estuaries will soon be demolished as part of the ongoing Pasig Urban Development Project. Informal settler families (ISF) living along the esteros will be relocated to a new settlement site.
Update on Estero de Magdalena
A new trash trap have been installed at Estero de Magdalena. This Trash Trap is designed to remove
floating debris from the surface of the water. The trap is constructed using galvanized steel with a mesh basket. The basket incorporates small holes to allow the flow of water to continue while the debris is collected.
DENR record shows that these traps have prevented at least 30 tons of solid waste from reaching the waters of Manila Bay through its various tributaries.
Some 270 informal settler families living along the estero have already been relocated to a new settlement site in Trece Martires, Cavite. The relocation of informal settler is part of the
ongoing rehabilitation project of Estero de Magdalena.
Estero de Magdalena is a six-kilometer waterway
which empties into Manila Bay via the Pasig River.
Estero de Magdalena is one of the 47 identified tributaries of the Pasig River that suffers from immense solid and liquid waste pollution problems.
The rehabilitation project aims to transform this creek into an environmental preservation area spanning 1,060 linear meters from Mayhaligue Street (Metropolitan Hospital) to Recto Avenue.
