Manila Could Become One of the Greenest Cities in Asia! ??

In 2016, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) has come up with the plans of converting Intramuros Golf Course into an open green park.

Tieza, which manages the golf course, plans to convert it into a public park. As part of a supplemental agreement, Tieza will extend the
Rizal Park Complex development to include what is now called the Extramuros area as an extension of the flagship TEZ.

The Club Intramuros golf course which Tieza has informally named Extramuros, just north of Rizal Park and practically adjacent to the park, will be turned into a public park with supporting commercial developments for tourism-related purposes.

However, the project did not push through due to certain circumstances and change of plans.

A brief history of Intramuros Golf Course

Established in the early 1900’s, Club Intramuros began its existence as a short nine-hole course known as the Manila Municipal Golf Links more commonly known as “Muni”. In the early 1930’s, the course came under the management of the City Government of Manila and was expanded to a full
18-holes 3,896-yards in length playing to a par of 60.

In 1981, control and management of the golf course was transferred to the Philippine Tourism Authority by presidential decree. It was at this time that the current clubhouse was built and other physical aspects of the golf course were improved.

It’s no secret that the city has evolved significantly since the idea of an Intramuros golf course was first conceived way back in the ’50s. While at the time, it may have been a bright idea, today, our urban landscape has transformed, and our priorities have shifted.

Over the years, we’ve witnessed an ever-increasing number of pedestrians visiting to Rizal Park, seeking the solace and rejuvenation that comes from open spaces These spaces have become essential oases amidst the bustling city life, where residents and visitors alike can find the breeze and joy of an open environment.

Transforming Intramuros into something magnificent like a beautiful green park would be a great idea. A green park extending from the Del Pan Bridge to Plaza Lawton where the rich tapestry of our city’s history can blend seamlessly with a lush green environment, open to all.

Metro Manila, the densely populated hub of the Philippines, grapples with a crucial dilemma: the demand for additional green spaces in the face of rapid urbanization. As the city expands, the scarcity of recreational areas and open spaces becomes more apparent.

In response, an innovative and sustainable solution emerges—the proposal to repurpose the public golf courses in Metro Manila into urban parks.
